exposing and describing who satan the devil is, his character, his tactics, and as the God of this world
If you mention the name “Satan” or “the Devil” today, you get a wild mix of reactions. Some people picture a cartoon character in a red jumpsuit holding a pitchfork. Others think of horror movie entities or treat him as a harmless metaphor for human bad behavior.
But if you look at the pages of the Bible, the description is far more sober, grounded, and—honestly—dangerous. Scripture doesn’t treat the devil as a myth. It exposes him as a highly strategic, deeply hostile adversary who actively influences our world.
To understand who he is, we have to pull back the curtain on his identity, his character, and his day-to-day tactics. By looking at three foundational Bible verses—John 8:44, 1 Peter 5:8, and Revelation 12:9—we can see exactly what we are up against.

1. The Father of Lies and Murderer
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
This verse captures the core of Satan’s character. Yahshua explicitly defines him as a murderer and a deceptive being whose very nature is rooted in falsehood.
2. The Prowling Predator
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
This verse highlights Satan’s active hostility toward humanity. Rather than a distant force, he is depicted as a dangerous, aggressive adversary seeking to spiritually destroy people.
3. The Ancient Serpent and Universal Deceiver
“The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Revelation 12:9)
This verse connects Satan’s identity across the entire biblical narrative, linking him back to the “ancient serpent” of Genesis. It identifies his main strategy as global deception and confirms his status as a fallen being.
If you want to understand him through his biblical names, the text frequently uses descriptive titles:
Title / Description and Core Meaning
Matthew 4:3
The Tempter — Entices people to rebel against Yahweh
2 Corinthians 4:4
The god of this age— Temporarily influences worldly,
unholy systems
2 Corinthians 11:14
Angel of Light— Masks evil with the appearance of good
and truth
Revelation 12:10
The Accuser— Criticizes and condemns believers
before Yahweh
How the Bible Says to Resist Satan
- Submit to Yahweh and stand firm: James 4:7 provides the most direct formula for spiritual victory: “Submit yourselves, then, to Yahweh. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” True resistance begins with total surrender to Yahweh’s authority.
- Put on the full Armor of Yahweh: Ephesians 6:11-13 instructs believers to protect themselves against spiritual deception: “Put on the full armor of Yahweh, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit (the Word of Yahweh).
- Stay alert and stand firm in faith: 1 Peter 5:9 follows the description of the “prowling lion” by commanding: “Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”
